UN Claim Global Green Economy Could Create 24m Jobs by 2030 / Written By: ClimateAction/UNEP May 20, 2018
The International Labour Organization claims that “A transition to agricultural sustainability and a circular economy will result in more and often better jobs.” This is pure fantasy, promoted to push people further into Sustainable Development. TN Editor
New markets in sustainability and clean energy could lead to a worldwide jobs boom, according to the UN’s labour agency. The urgent need to reduce our dependence on carbon and resource intensive industries will also create more winners than losers: 24 million new green jobs will offset an estimated 6 million job losses. The International Labour Organization (ILO), which represents workers, governments and employers across 189 member states, produced the analysis into the global transition to sustainable and low-carbon economies.
The agency analysed 163 economic sectors and surveyed multiple states to obtain accurate data into how sustainability could impact working people. They found that most industries are set to benefit and only 14 would suffer more than 10,000 jobs worldwide.
Economies which are heavily dependent on petroleum and other fossil fuels could suffer a more substantial downturn with losses of over 1 million worldwide. However, the growth in renewable energy is more than ready to step in with an estimated 2.5 million new jobs created in the industry, mainly from solar, wind and biomass power.
Combined with new construction jobs in energy efficiency and electric vehicles will create a total of 18 million jobs. In addition, the uptake of circular practices which embrace an economic model based on reuse and recycling could create an extra 6 million positions.
“The findings of our report underline that jobs rely heavily on a healthy environment and the services that it provides. The green economy can enable millions more people to overcome poverty, and deliver improved livelihoods for this and future generations. This is a very positive message of opportunity in a world of complex choices,” ILO Deputy Director-General Deborah Greenfield said at the launch.
One of the other key findings of the report is that 23 countries have already succeeded in growing their economies while reducing carbon emissions at the same time. This decoupling in both production and consumption was prevalent among the world’s largest economies, such as the United States, Great Britain, and Germany.

Shots Fired at Trump’s Golf Resort in Doral, Florida: Police
BY:  Reuters – May 18, 2018 – (Reuters) – Police shot a man at the Trump National Doral Golf Club, a Miami-area resort owned by U.S. President Donald Trump, early on Friday morning, police said. The man, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital and it was unclear what condition he was in, the Miami-Dade Police Department said on Twitter.
Officers responded to a call about shots being fired, and they shot a man there, the department said. Trump National Doral Golf Club, an 800-acre resort outside of Miami, is home to four championship golf courses, including the Blue Monster, which plays host to a PGA Tour event each year. Trump bought the property for $150 million in 2012.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was investigating the shooting involving police, the Miami-Dade Police Department said.

DCCC Hit With Ethics Complaint After Secret Recording Released
Watchdog: DCCC illegally gave in-kind donations to preferred candidate
May 16, 2018  –  A government ethics watchdog Tuesday filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission after audio from a secretly recorded conversation implied the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee tipped the scales in favor of their preferred candidate, and may have violated campaign finance laws in the process.
The secret recording of a conversation between House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer and Levi Tillemann, a Democrat candidate for the 6th Congressional District in Colorado, was made last December. The audio became public after the Intercept published it in April with Tillemann’s consent after some names and private information were edited out.
Hoyer makes plain to Tillemann in the recording that some higher-ups in the Democratic party preferred Army veteran and corporate lawyer Jason Crow be the party’s nominee in the district.he Intercept’s story on the audio included a quote from David Aarestad, who by that time had dropped out of the same race. “But, they [the DCCC] made polling data available to Crow that they did not make available to me,” Aarestad was quoted as saying. “They made other resources available to Crow that they did not make available to me, such as email lists for fundraising purposes.”
FACT wrote in its complaint that the polling data and email lists were in-kind contributions that appear not to have been reported, but should have been.
“Candidate reporting requirements exist to prevent corruption and ensure transparency in our elections, which is something the DCCC showed a blatant disregard for in this case,” Kendra Arnold, FACT’s executive director, said in a statement. “What’s equally disturbing is that this type of Machiavellian behavior has been endorsed by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi,” Arnold added.  Requests for comment from the DCCC and the Jason Crow campaign were not returned. Hoyer’s office declined to comment on the record. Colorado’s 6th District is likely to be one of the most competitive house races in the country; Republican Mike Coffman, a former Marine and state treasurer who is now in his fifth term, currently holds the seat. He has defeated formidable opponents in the last two elections: a former speaker of the Colorado house and president of the state senate.

Hundreds Of Handbags, 72 Suitcases Full Of Jewels Seized From Ousted Malaysian Leader’s Home
It took five trucks to haul away some of the belongings, because police also had to fit 284 boxes filled with designer handbags – including Birkin bags from Hermes, which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
World | 2018 The Washington Post | Siobhán O’Grady, The Washington Post | Updated: May 19, 2018 Photos show police carrying out orange boxes, with labels reading “Paris, H Bag Gray Croco Skin Hermes.” Former prime minister Najib Razak and his wife were barred last week from leaving Malaysia in the wake of his stunning election loss, over fears that they may evade prosecution in a massive corruption scandal.
Then, police announced Friday that raids on properties linked to Najib had turned up 72 suitcases stuffed with jewels and cash. It took five trucks to haul away some of the belongings, because police also had to fit 284 boxes filled with designer handbags – including Birkin bags from Hermes, which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Photos show police carrying out orange boxes, with labels reading “Paris, H Bag Gray Croco Skin Hermes” and “Switzerland, Bag Blue w/Diamonte Croc Skin, Hermes.” Malaysia’s recently ousted prime minister, Najib Razak, has been barred from leaving the country.
“Exactly how much jewelry, I would not be able to say, because we know that we confiscated bags containing jewelry, and the number of jewelry is rather big,” Amar Singh, head of Malaysia’s commercial crime investigation unit, told reporters on Friday. Even before the raids, Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, had a reputation for taking luxurious shopping trips abroad. The raids come as Malaysia’s new government ramps up its investigation of corruption allegations against them. U.S. investigators say that at least $4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1Malaysia Development Berhad, a government investment fund that Najib oversaw. Some of that missing money allegedly wound up in his personal account.

It’s Time For The United States To Stop Funding Other Wealthy Countries’ Defense
Article 5’s commitment to common defense means nothing if other NATO members aren’t making, or actively trying to make, their contributions to the club.
By Willis L. Krumholz – May 17, 2018 – Most people know about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO’s) Article 5 pledge of collective defense: An attack on a NATO member is considered an attack on all members. Undergirding Article 5 is the promise all NATO members made to maintain defense spending at 2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).
The idea behind the 2 percent rule is simple: No NATO member can come anywhere near America’s $700 billion Pentagon budget, but America has a much larger economy than the other NATO members do. By requiring each NATO member to contribute according to the size of their respective economies, the alliance ensures every country contributes its “fair share.”
This rule attempts to cut down on free riders. Germany, for example, might think that given America’s commitment to defend them-and a never-higher American defense budget, surpassing U.S. defense spending even at the height of the Cold War in real (inflation-adjusted) terms-allows Germany’s politicians to sit back and let America do all the work. But the rule is being ignored. Right now, countries in the NATO alliance are largely not meeting their obligations-and there’s no indication they plan to do so.
In 2017, America spent 3.58 percent of GDP on defense. Germany spent 1.22 percent of GDP, Belgium spent 0.91 percent, Italy spent 1.13, Spain spent 0.92, and the Czech Republic spent 1.07 percent. France, meanwhile, spent a relatively better 1.79 percent of GDP on its defense tab. Our neighbor to the north, Canada, controls huge amounts of relatively unpopulated territory with oodles of natural resources, but only spends 1.31 percent of GDP on defense.
Of NATO’s 28 members that existed in the full year of 2017, the only five countries (aside from America) that met their 2 percent obligation were the United Kingdom., Romania, Poland, Greece, and Estonia. Even this list requires an asterisk, as Greece meeting its target has much to do with that country’s beleaguered economy shrinking in the last decade.

Education: New Data Show California Kids’ Math Achievement Took A Nosedive After Common Core.
By 2014, California was the top state in eighth-grade algebra enrollment. Common Core erased all those gains almost immediately, shows a new Hoover Institution analysis.
By Joy Pullmann – May 16, 2018 – Before Common Core came along, California parents, faculty, and officials spent years developing some of the best-ranked K-12 math requirements in the nation. One result of their careful work was more than tripling the number of eighth graders who ranked proficient in math, and quadrupling the number of eighth graders taking algebra.
By 2014, California was the top state in the nation in eighth-grade algebra enrollment. That was the year Common Core went into place. It erased all those gains almost immediately, shows a new Hoover Institution analysis.
The shocking graphs in the study by Bill Evers and Ze’ev Wurman tell the whole story in one glance. Here’s one. For reference, the Obama administration pushed states into Common Core in 2010, but it started phasing into schools at the earliest in 2013, and more in earnest in 2014 and 2015. That’s right when all the achievement jumps off a cliff.
“[I]n the four years under Common Core, the number of eighth graders taking Algebra I in California dropped precipitously to 19 percent in 2017, taking California back to where it was around 1999, when early algebra taking was the privilege of the elite. And while all demographic groups lost ground, the loss for Latino and African American students was much deeper than for white and Asian Americans,” write Wurman and Evers, who both vainly voted against California adopting Common Core on a state commission. The graph below shows the deeper damage to minority students in more detail.

Amazon briefly hit session low after report that Trump pushed the USPS to double its shipping rates
oPresident Trump has reportedly asked the postmaster general to double the shipping rates it charges Amazon and other companies, the Washington Post reports.
oPostmaster General Megan Brennan, the chief executive officer of the U.S. Postal Service, has pushed back on Trump’s demand in a number of meetings, according to the Post.
oLast month, Trump signed an executive order establishing a task force to look at the operations and finances of the USPS and recommend reforms.
Kevin Breuninger – Sara Salinas  – President Donald Trump has directly pressured the U.S. Postal Service’s chief to double the rates charged to e-commerce giant Amazon and other companies, the Washington Post reported Friday, citing three people familiar with the conversations.
The president has personally pushed the postmaster general, Megan Brennan, to make the move, which could potentially cost Amazon billions of dollars, the Post reported.
Brennan, the first female to hold the role of the Postal Service’s chief executive officer, has reportedly pushed back on Trump’s demand. The newspaper said Brennan has told Trump that Amazon’s shipping arrangements are bound by contracts, and have been beneficial to the Postal Service.
Trump was unswayed by Brennan’s arguments, which were made during several meetings starting in 2017 and occurring as recently as four months ago, the Post reported.

5G Wireless Brings Health Concerns Over The Towers That Support It
Written By: CBSNewYork May 30, 2018

The uproar over 5G wireless installations will likely not diminish as carriers move closer to full implementation. The new technology promises to enable and connect the ubiquitous Internet of Everything, but it will potentially create a toxic soup of high-energy microwave frequencies. TN Editor The wireless industry is in a race to roll out 5G service. The network is supposed to be up to 100 times faster than current data speeds, but it requires cellphone tower equipment to be closer to users than before. Wireless companies in the U.S. say they’ll have to install about 300,000 new antennas – roughly equal to the total number of cell towers built over the past three decades. That’s causing outrage and alarm in some neighborhoods, as antennas go up around homes

Supreme Court rules police need warrant to search vehicle on private property

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that police generally cannot enter private property to search a motor vehicle without first obtaining a warrant.

The 8-1 decision overruling three lower courts was written by Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Justice Samuel Alito dissented, calling a Virginia police officer’s actions reasonable when he walked up a private driveway to confirm that a motorcycle had been stolen.

The stolen motorcycle had outrun two different police officers from the same Virginia department in 2013. So when Officer David Rhodes examined what he suspected was the same motorcycle under a tarp in a driveway, he waited patiently for Ryan Collins to come home, then placed him under arrest.

The high court ruled that same year that police need a warrant to search outside a private home. But automobiles are exempt from most Fourth Amendment privacy protections if a crime is suspected, because they can be moved quickly and are highly regulated. In Collins’ case, those two precedents collided.

Sotomayor and seven colleagues resolved the collision in favor of privacy. “The automobile exception does not permit an officer without a warrant to enter a home or its curtilage in order to search a vehicle therein,” Sotomayor ruled. “The scope of the automobile exception extends no further than the automobile itself.”

Trump’s net worth declined for the second year in a row, Bloomberg reports
William Cummings, USA TODAY Published 9:59 p.m. ET May 31, 2018 | Updated 6:07 a.m. ET June 1, 2018
According to a report from Bloomberg, Trump’s overall net worth slipped a bit to $2.8 billion. Veuer’s Nick Cardona has that story. Buzz60
President Trump’s net worth fell $100 million this year as revenue from Trump Tower and his golf courses slipped, according to an analysis by Bloomberg.

But don’t feel too bad. The president is far from a pauper: The new estimate compiled by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index puts Trump’s worth at $2.8 billion.

It is the lowest for Trump since Bloomberg began tracking his wealth in 2015, the report said. The value of Trump’s holdings was estimated by looking at data from lenders, property records, annual reports and the financial disclosure the president released on May 16.

According to Bloomberg, the biggest blow to Trump assets came from two neighboring Manhattan buildings: Trump Tower and 6 E. 57th St. The Trump Organization’s golf course declined in value by $70 million.

Out of Poverty and Onto the Ballot: the New Wave of Working-Class Candidates Trying to Take Congress
Aída Chávez
June 2 2018, 8:00 a.m.
The first Wednesday in August was a busy one for David Trone. In the morning, Trone, the co-founder of retail chain Total Wine & More, which has made him very wealthy, announced that he would make his second run for Congress.

Trone’s first bid for Congress had come the year before, when he had spent $13 million of his own money and still lost the primary in Maryland’s 8th Congressional District, to the east of his current target.

This time around, he said, he would raise some money from supporters. That would perhaps shed the image that he was trying to buy his way into Congress.

By the end of the day, he and his wife had cut four checks to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, for a total of $267,200.

That was never an option on the whiteboard for Roger Manno, Trone’s opponent in the Democratic primary in Maryland’s 6th District.

Manno is now a Maryland state senator and the party’s majority whip, but it’s been a long road that has taken him through extended bouts of homelessness, unemployment, and other economic depredations rarely found in the biographies of members of Congress, who are much more likely to note that they are the sons or daughters — or even grandchildren — of millworkers or the like.
